My cat is pooping outside the box and seems sick. Vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 9 lbs

Should my cat see a vet? We found water on the floor two days ago that we imagine might be puke, and found that she pooped under my desk yesterday and there was a small wet spot under the otherwise normal feces. She is peeing in her box as normal but inconsistently will poop in the litter box or otherwise right outside of it. Yesterday is the first time she ever pooped under my desk, in a completely different room than her box. She still is eating and acting normally. Is this an emergency?

Hello, sorry to hear about Lorna. Its unlikely to be an emergency but she may not be feeling like her normal self and may have an upset stomach. I would recommend having her evaluated by her veterinarian. If you note however that she is not eating, develops vomiting or lethargy then she should be evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.
