Why does my dog have a dark bump on his elbow after grooming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Male | 3 years and 4 months old | 5 lbs

I noticed my dog has a dark bump or scab on his elbow. Last week after his haircut, he had a red mark there. I was wondering what was it since its not flat like a scab. He's not bleeding nor in pain.

That could be an infection or area of irritation. You could have him examined which would give you a better idea of the cause. You could also watch it for a week and see what happens. Protect the area from licking or rubbing. Keep it clean and dry. You may apply a tiny dab of organic coconut oil once a day to moisturize it. If the lesion is still there in a week or if it is getting worse at any point, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps.

Ouch that looks like there may be a hot spot or wound on that elbow. If it's very painful and bothersome, I'd have it looked at by your vet. They can take a look, trim away the hair to see how irritated the area is, clean it, and provide you with some pain meds or antibiotics as needed to help Shadow heal. Keeping an Elizabethan (cone) collar on him is also a good idea to prevent more licking or chewing on the spot that can cause more irritation.
