My dog has a hole in her leg. What should I do before the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 45 lbs

Hello I was petting my dog last night when I came across a hole in her leg. I cleaned it up and she wasn’t showing any kind of pain from it but it looks horrible she’s a very active and playful dog she’s a year and half and her name is Hera. I would have rushed her to my vet but they are closed until Tuesday. And the closest Emergency Vet is about 2 hours away. I’m trying to figure out what this is or could be online but not having any luck. Thank you

Hello, sorry to hear about Hera. It looks like an older wound that needs to be clean, clipped, and likely repaired surgically. It does not appear to be bleeding at this time also you can start by placing an e-collar on your puppy's that she does not lick at the area. Have her evaluated by her veterinarian tomorrow Tuesday so that this can be examined and taken care of. Its likely a traumatic wound through the skin that did not bleed a lot. It looks like it could be several days old and thus not an immediate emergency, but I would not wait longer than tomorrow to get it looked at so that it does not turn into a large infection. If Hera at any point develops any discharge, bleeding, pain, lethargy, or seems to have a fever then she should be evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.
