Why is my old dog coughing and breathing heavy when excited or sleeping?

For the past 3 weeks my chihuahua/dachshund has had a cough and heavy breathing. Especially when she is excited or sleeping. What could this be? She is 10 years old. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5.8 lbs

It is concerning that Coco is breathing heavily when she is sleeping - I'd be concerned that the cough could be due to heart disease or a respiratory disease. I'd recommend having your vet examine Coco. They might recommend chest x-rays as the first step.
