My dog is foaming at the mouth. Is it serious? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

My Maltese started foaming at the mouth. He is up on all of his shots. I recently got a kitten. Could that have anything to do with it? He’s been around cats all his life.

I recommend to have Mojo examined by the veterinarian. Foaming at the mouth can indicate nausea, an ulcer in the mouth/GI tract, a bad tooth or even something like rabies (which would be uncommon in a vaccinated dog but it's still on the list of possibilities and can spread to humans). Play it safe and have him examined today.
