Why is my cat gagging, sometimes with foam, then acting lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

My cat has been gagging in last 48 hours but nothing is coming out? A little bit liquid with foam came out once but that was it, it’s sporadic when he gags... He doesn’t act too sick, he’s running, playing but then after he’s lethargic and huddles... Is this a cat cold, hair ball?

Hello, Oliver may indeed be working on reliving a hairball. However, other causes for this may include a tooth infection or an upset GI tract. If he continues to do this, develops vomiting, a decreased appetite, diarrhea, or lethargy then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
