My hamster has bloody stool, is constipated, and won't eat. What's wrong?

My Syrian Hamster is only about 2 months old but he has been showing blood in his stool for a day, seems constipated, and today refuses to eat or drink anything and has almost no energy to move

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy and including photos. He appears very ill, and a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Intestinal infections and parasites can cause rectal/colonic bleeding, leading to illness. A fecal examination under the microscope can determine the type of parasite and the specific treatment. Offering fluids via a syringe can helps decrease the risk of dehydration. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Butters and including photos. This appears to be diarrhea and pretty severe. This can be very serious in young animals as can lead to dehydration. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Bacterial and/or parasitic enteritis are very common. Hamsters have very sensitive intestinal tracts so a veterinarian with companion exotic mammal experience is important in order to provide the correct antibiotic. Do not offer any treats and try to offer water via a syringe. Good luck.

Hello. The first thing you need to do is have a fecal sample analyzes by your veterinarian. Do not stress Tobias out by bringing him to the vet, just drop a sample off for the stool analysis. Then, go from there. If you are feeding him a predominately seed diet, you need to switch him to a lab/rodent chow. Go very slow in switching him over. To increase fluid intake, offer him pureed vegetable baby foods. If the stool analysis is negative for anything significant, then you may need to have him examined for a good exam, including an oral one, & possible further treatment. Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that Lily is not doing well. Bleeding from the rectal area can be caused by several issues. If you're sure the blood is coming from her rectum and not from her urethra or vagina, she may have an intestinal problem, like constipation or a parasite. It's also possible that she has a common hamster condition called wet tail, if she also has loose stools. Wet tail is severe diarrhea that is sometimes accompanied by bloody stools in certain severe cases, and is caused by a bacterial infection. It can be deadly, so acquiring treatment by a veterinarian is important to ensure survival. If the blood could be coming from the vaginal or urethral area, she could have a uterine or urinary tract infection that is causing the bleeding. I can see that Kiwi has what appears to be a dilated anus. This can be associated with a rectal prolapse, when a portion of the rectum everts to the outside. Parasites, high fiber diets, and increased abdominal pressure can cause this. I recommend having Kiwi seen by a vet as soon as possible, as this condition is likely uncomfortable for Kiwi. In the meantime, I recommend making sure she has plenty of soft, moistened food and monitoring her for signs such as hunched posture and weight loss. I hope this helps and that all is well!

It can be due to inflammation in the colon and straining to defecate. However, it can also indicate a more serious condition such as pancreatitis or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The veterinarian will examine him and may perform fecal tests and bloodwork. Constipation is usually seen with small hard feces being passed. Diarrhea is a more common of straining to defecate. In the meantime, encourage him to drink water as this can help to prevent dehydration. The veterinarian will prescribe medication to help him. I hope this information helps!

Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infections and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. As vomiting, diarrhea, and bloody stool are all very general signs of several illnesses, it would be best to bring Buddy to your vet ASAP to have him evaluated. It's possible he ate a mouse and is having GI upset, ate a mouse that had ingested a rodentcide, has parasites, an infection, obstruction, or any other number of potential issues. A full workup, including possible bloodwork or X-ray is best to determine why Buddy isn't feeling well.
