My pregnant small dog is eating socks. What do I need for birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 6 days old | 10 lbs

My dog is pregnant and will be giving birth soon I have never helped a small dog give birth any advice on what to look for or things I may need on hand or ways to make the process as smooth as can be . She seems as she is producing milk but when I go to squeeze to see if any milk comes out she cries doesn’t want me to touch them & there seems to be not much milk is there any certain reason behind that ? This past week she has been eating socks like crazy would this be an indication of any sort?

For small dogs, I recommend to have a radiograh taken prior to labor. Small dogs are more prone to problems giving birth and it helps to know how may puppies to expect. Also, you need to stop her from eating socks and anything else she should not. This could cause an intestinal blockage with requires surgery. lastly, the process is the same for small dogs as it is for large dogs.
