My dog has tea tree oil poisoning. Can a vet still treat him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 9 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

Hi, I accidentally poisoned my 9 yr old pug by diffusing about 7 drops of a generic blend of essential oils on Sunday night, not realizing that it contained tea tree oil. He has been really quiet since Monday and I wasn't sure why until I started researching online. Today he is very wobbly, has loose orange stool and has started coughing. I'm really afraid that he might have acute liver failure. Can a vet do anything at this stage, or is it too late? He is still eating and drinking OK.

Hello. If Pugley is still eating & drinking, there is always a very good chance of treatment with recovery. Please have him evaluated as soon as possible. The sooner an actual diagnosis is made, the sooner the proper treatment can be started to get him well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
