How to comfort a scared rat after her cage was broken by a dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 1lb

My wife and I bought 3 adolescent medium rats from Petco around 2 weeks ago. All three of them had pneumonia and two of them were too sick for the medicine to work properly. Our brave survivor, Frankie, is recovering well and regaining her loving, inquisitive personality by the day. However, our dog opened the bedroom and broke her cage when we went for groceries earlier. She was hiding scared but physically healthy. How can we comfort her as she grieves and restore her safety net and comfort?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Frankie. What a tough little girl! She has been through a lot. I would start by always moving very slowly around her. Offer treats to help build her trust. Be sure to keep the dog away from her cage. Speak slowly and softly to her. Do not handle her until she seems more confident with you. I hope this information helps!
