Goldfish spazzing in 5-gallon tank? Is it the water quality?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Gold Fish | Male | unneutered

One of my goldfish is spazzing out. I feel like it's because of the water condition because, even though the water is perfectly clear, they are two goldfish in a 5 gal tank (beyond my control). How should I deal with this situation and how should I continue to care for them in the future? They have been living in the tank for over a year now and they have been fine until now.

Thanks for reaching out about Timothy and Lola. First suggestion is to get a large tank. The general rule of thumb is 1" of fish per 3 gallons of water. Test and correct water quality for pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. The better the filtration, the higher the bio-load. So better filtration or a second filter could help. Good luck.
