My dog ate chocolate. What to do for stomach upset & grass eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

My dog accidentally ate a small piece of chocolate from an ice cream yesterday and she had no symptoms yesterday. But today her stomach is making noises and she’s been eatting grass but has no appetite and is drinking water. She had a little bit of a loose stool as well. This morning she was shaking periodically but she stopped now. Other than this she’s behaving normally and has more then enough energy to go on walks and bark as she normally does. What can I do to help her pass this over?

You could try feeding Coco a bland diet as long as she doesn't have any food sensitivities - plain, boiled chicken breast and white rice is a good choice. If you notice more shaking or she seems agitated or hyperactive you should see a vet right away since these could be signs of chocolate toxicity (it would be pretty unlikely from a small bite of chocolate ice cream). If the decreased appetite and loose stool continues despite the bland diet you should see your vet.
