My cat ate gabapentin and is staggering. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

My cat (~4 kg, 12.5 yrs old) I think, ingested a 300 mg cap of gabapentin about 18 hrs ago. It took us a while to find his hiding place, because he didn't come when we called him. When we found him, his pupils were so dilated that there was only was only a thin ring of orange; they are almost back to normal in the past 2 hrs. He still won't drink even h2o on his lips, is lethargic & is staggering. He has tried to groom a tad, & he did pee a normal amt & color on a paper pad. No vomit or diarh.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Nikolai should be okay as far as toxicity goes. 300mg is a lot but not at the point at which you would see liver toxicity or other adverse health problems. However, that being said, if he is still lethargic and acting abnormal, I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to establish a baseline as well. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
