Why is my 9-year-old dog staring blankly and sleeping in odd places?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 70 lbs

Last night my dog just stood there staring off into space twice, and wouldn't respond when I called her name. Also, at bedtime she usually comes and sleeps on the bed, but instead she crawled underneath my desk chair and went to sleep there. In the middle of the night she came up to sleep on the bed. How concerned do I need to be? She is a 9 year old German shepherd mix. Eating and drinking habits are normal, and have not noticed any accidents in the house.

As long as she is behaving normally otherwise, you can monitor her at home. If the behavior persists or worsens, consider an exam with your veterinarian. The symptoms described could be due to old age changes. Your veterinarian may recommend blood work and a neurological exam to rule out medical causes. https://www.petcoach.co/article/4-signs-of-cognitive-dysfunction-in-dogs/ https://www.petcoach.co/article/aging-gracefully-6-things-to-know-about-canine-cognitive-dysfunct/
