Dog bronchoscope: Will light sedation prevent distress and aggression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | neutered | 13 years and 8 months old | 24 lbs

Hi, my 13 3/4 year old springer spaniel is booked into my local vet on Monday for a bronchoscope to try to establish the source of him coughing blood. They have said he will only get light sedation and not a full general anaesthetic. Is this usual practice. I’m extremely concerned he will be terribly distressed and could potentially become aggressive. Thank you

Thank you for you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It depends on the medications the doctor uses for Sam but the sedation should make him very relaxed so he won’t become distressed and therefore won’t become aggressive. The medications will keep his heart rate and blood pressure from rising to anxious levels so he won’t feel like he needs to be stressed. He will be relaxed enough for them the place the scope. Good luck and I hope you get answers for Sam!
