My cat's anal gland is swollen and she's hiding. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 9 lbs

Is the gland ruptured or swollen? She suddenly starting hiding and not being as friendly or energetic. Thursday morning she was fine but at night she started acting strange. And then Friday night she was doing it again and I picked her and noticed that sore. What can I expect when going to vet? Is this an emergency? Its 2am where I'm at. Shes not crying and shes just chilling.

Hi, sorry I could not see any pictures attached to your question. In general an anal gland abscess, wether is has ruptured or not, does not warrant a visit in the middle of the night. If Cleo is reasonably bright, it can wait until the morning. I would definitely recommend a check up though as it can be quite painful ! I would put an e collar to prevent Cloe to lick/groom the area.
