Is my 5-week-old puppy too young for vaccines and outdoor play?

I rescued a 4 week old puppy from Facebook. Her mother had milk fever. There were 5 puppies in the litter. They are Husky-Shitz Zu-Schnauzer. I have a female puppy. Wen I got her se had fleas. I bathed her in Neem shampoo and shes flea free. Anytime I have gotten a puppy I made sure it had its first shots by 6 weks old. She came to us not vaccinated. I am very worried cause she is so young. Can I give her a 9 way or a 5 way at 5 weeks old? I like to take her outside to potty and run around.

No, five weeks is too young for vaccines. She has to be at least six weeks of age before getting her first vaccine, and even then, it still won't be safe for her to go outside and run around unless she is in a confined yard where no other dogs have access to it.

HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! 5 weeks is a bit young to leave her mother but if she is fully weaned it should be ok. We usually do not start vaccines until they are 7 weeks of age. Some breeders will give them a parvo vaccine at under 7 weeks. You should be fine until she gets her first vaccine but people with sick dogs or unvaccinated dogs shouldn't handle her and she needs to be kept away from all dogs. I hope this helps and good luck!

Hi and thanks for posting! No, that is a little too young. Usually puppies are vaccinated at 8 weeks of age. We do this so their mother's antibodies they get from nursing do not interfere too much with the efficacy of the vaccines. I hope this helps!

The very real risk of putting her on the ground (public sidewalk, dog park, even petstore floor) is that she could contract a disease called parvovirus which is shed in the feces of infected dogs. If she walks over parvovirus particles (where other owners scooped up infected feces), and licks her paws, she could contract parvovirus which usually results in serve life threatening diarrhea and dehydration and requires expensive overnight care at an emergency hospital often lasting several days. Puppies are usually vaccinated against distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza virus at 8 weeks, again at 12 weeks and again at 14 weeks with the last booster at 14 + weeks of age in order for immunity to be effective for a full year. (Other vaccines include Bordatella at 8+ weeks of age, Rabies at 12+ weeks of age, lepto and Lyme at 12+ weeks of age -lepto and Lyme each need to be boosted 3-4 weeks after the initial dose to provide a year's worth of immunity and are often not given i

Yes 5 weeks is too early for the first vaccination which should be given not before 7-8 weeks, vaccinations have very little to no effect before that. if your other dogs are vaccinated you have nothing to worry about.

Congratulations on your new puppy. At his young age, he can go to the veterinarian for a wellness exam to make sure everything looks okay and he could receive his first deworming treatment. Most veterinarians would recommend waiting to give the first vaccination at 6-7 weeks. If you have any concerns about him including diet due to his very young age, I would take him right away for his first exam and deworming, if he is eating well with no issues, you could wait and take him at 6 weeks for the deworming and vaccine to be done at the same time. If this puppy was born on April 13th, then she is too young to have gotten any vaccines. She will be five weeks of age when you get her, and puppies are not old enough to be first vaccinated until they are six to eight weeks of age. I would make an appointment with a vet for a week after you get her to start her vaccines. She will not be fully vaccinated until she has three series of her DHPPi combination shot (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) each given four weeks apart. Until that time, she should not be allowed in public, do not take her for walks, and only have her potty in your backyard. She will be susceptible to catching parvo and distemper until she is fully vaccinated, and since those are so deadly, you want to avoid it. The vet will go over the vaccine schedule with you, and discuss getting her rabies vaccines as well (that is required by law). Vaccines are typically given at 4 week intervals, not 1 week intervals. Stella should be vaccinated at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. She should have a complete physical exam prior to ensure she is healthy enough for vaccines. Core vaccines include the distemper/parvovirus combination vaccine and a rabies vaccine given after 12 weeks of age. Stella is likely not adequately protected following your vaccine protocol and should not be exposed to other dogs, especially dogs of unknown vaccine status.

Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco! She is not too young to be away from mom if she is 5 weeks of age. Pets are vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age, and are usually weaned off of mom at this age. Since you have another pet in the home that does go outside, it is best to start vaccines for this pup once she is 6-8 weeks of age. Intestinal worms usually don't make pets too sick, but it can cause loose stool and potential vomiting. They still will eat well and do well as long as the worms are treated in a timely fashion (within 1-2 weeks), so this is an easy fix if you do encounter this. If your other pet is on a monthly heartworm prevention, then it has a natural intestinal dewormer in it as well that can protect your pet against 2 types of worms (hookworms and roundworms), which are the most common types of worms seen in puppies. But again, if you do happen to encounter a worm problem, this is easily dealt with with the appropriate dewormer, so keep an eye out for any loose sto

I have 5 week old puppies and am wondering when I should get their first shots and what they would include. They are German shepherds.
Around 6-8 weeks of age, they should get their first Distemper Parvovirus Adenovirus 1 and 2 (Hepatitis) Parainfluenza vaccine and Bordatella Kennel cough vaccine. They will need a Distemper booster every 3 weeks with the last one being given when they are at least 14 weeks old. The Rabies vaccine is generally given at 14 weeks of age but can be given as early as 12 weeks. Other vaccines that your vet may recommend include lepto, lyme and influenza, all of which require boosters 3 weeks after the initial dose. In addition to vaccines the puppies should be dewormed and checked for intestinal parasites via a fecal exam. Congrats and good luck!

Can a puppy receive the 7 in 1 vaccination at 5 weeks of age?
No, vaccnes should not begin until 7-8 weeks of age. Additionally I would not recommend a 7 in 1 until the puppy is at least 12 weeks old. Typically only Distemper/parvo and bordetella is recommended this young. Please post again with any further questions.
