How to train my new stray cat to stop jumping, stealing, and biting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 months and 27 days old

We just got out new kitty about a month ago how do we train her to stop jumping on the counters or eatting anything she finds or swiping food off the plate. The animal adoption place told me she was a stray it looks like and she gets mad and meows and starts to bite when we keep taking her off the counters or take people food away if she gets into it. She dosnt bite hard or anything it’s playful but we just would like some tips how to train .

If she was a stray, this behavior could be related to starving at times while on her own. It will take time for her to adjust and she may always worry about food. Here are some links which may help: https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-stop-a-cat-from-jumping-on-the-counter/ https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-stop-your-cat-from-biting/ Make sure to always keep the food put up so that Minnie stops getting a reward when she gets on the counters. You may also feed her far away from the kitchen to help decrease an association with food. Be patient and positive. I hope this helps.
