Why does my indoor-outdoor cat have scabs and cuts on its head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old

In the past 5 days, I’ve noticed my cat (2 years old) has several cuts and scabs on his head. He is an indoor-outdoor cat. I’m unsure if it is from getting into fights with other outdoor animals, if he got stuck somewhere and tried to get our or if it is something serious. It started very small (where red circle is in photo), but has since progressed to more. The scabs are dry in some areas and secreting clear liquid in other areas. No obvious swelling. Our other cat has no symptoms.

Since the lesions are getting worse, I recommend o have Theo examined. It's likely these lesions are infected although something like an allergic reaction, ringworm (which humans can get) or skin mites are also possible. He should also be kept indoors and wear an elizabethan collar until these are healed. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
