My gerbil has a red lump near his testicles. Is it a prolapse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, One of my gerbils seem to have a red lump/ abscess right between his testicles. He behaves normal and doesn't seem to be bother by it. I'm not sure it is something normal as I am pretty sure it comes and goes ( he had it yesterday but I didn't see it later on in the day...) Thank you, Nazz

Thanks for reaching out about Thorondor and including a photo. This appears to be a prolapsed rectum and is not normal. This could be an intestinal infection or foreign body can lead to straining and the prolapse. A veterinary visit is highly recommended, as soon as possible as even though seems to come and go, so could become more serious. Try cleaning the tissue with a mild soap. A cloth soaked in sugar solution, can sometimes be used to reduce tissue swelling. Good luck.
