Why does my Yorkie struggle to breathe when lying down with a mass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

On our yorky’s left side adjacent to his spine and on the outside of his rib cage he has a very large mass. Vet a year ago said just a fat deposit and no problem. Now we are alarmed as when he lies on his side whether awake or sleeping he has very labored breathing, wheezing terribly (not like allergies). His sides heave violently when this happens to the point his rib cage seems to struggle to expand then he heaves violently. Seems to struggle to breathe but not when erect. Help? Charles

Tanno needs to be examined by the veterinarian. A fatty mass is not expected to cause problems breathing. It could be coincidental. Problems breathing can be related to heart disease or lung disease. If Tanno is currently struggling to breath, this could indicate an emergency and he should be examined quickly. A physical exam will help to narrow down the causes. I hope this helps.
