Why is one of my dog's eyes metallic and reflective? Is it an issue?

Daisy experienced severe head trauma from her previous owner abusing her. Only one eye has this metallic look to it, and it's extremely reflective. What is it, and is it an issue?

That may be normal. A dog has a structure in the eye called the tapetum lucidum. It allows the dog to see better in the dark, it reflects light. I'd still have Daisy checked out by a vet to be safe. Poor girl being abused.

This is normal in dogs! It's a part of their anatomy (also in cats and other similar species) called the tapetum lucidum. This is what gives dogs that glowy, reflective look and a "red eye" when looking into a camera or light at night. Should I be worried about blindness? I watched a show that mentioned red eye in dogs could indicate blindness; I've had a blind dog before, and have no problem doing it again, just need to know.
Hello, that reflection in your dogs eyes appears like norma tapetal reflection. Red eyes do not always indicate blindness, so I wouldn't create that association with your dog's eyes. More so, look for any signs to bumping into things, being startled, looking into space and being unable to find his food bowl. These would be more likely to be consistent with blindness. What you're seeing is likely the small blood vessels of the eye and pigmentation of the cornea. This is typically very normal, but if you are concerned you should take Dunbar to the vet for an ocular exam.

It is difficult to say without a picture, if not an eye exam. Tapetal reflection can be seen during daylight depending on where you and Tomita are in relation to a light source. If this is the case, the eye could be normal. If the shining is in the anterior chamber, this could be uveitis, a problem with the iris, a lipid Deposit, or other. The fact that the eye is visual and comfortable is a great sign but a good eye exam (with a veterinary ophthalmologist if it is very unusual) is a good idea.

I can see that the sclera (white part of the eye) does look a little red in your last picture. This could be from trauma but can also be seen with conjunctivitis or even a corneal ulcer. Given Mitzer's breed I would recommend seeing a vet to make sure the cornea does not appear affected. They can also look at the lens and the back of the eye to make sure there is nothing abnormal that would cause a difference in the reflection from the back of the eye.

When you take photos of your pets or people and the flash hits the eyes at a certain angle you will be able to see through the pupils to the back of the lense which has a lot of blood vessels. My dog has had consistent red eyes since we got him at 3 months old. Today we saw this odd finding in his eye. His right eye is the only symptomatic one as his left eye is perfectly normal. Does this look normal?
It looks like a scar on the cornea although without examining him myself with an ophthalmoscope it is hard for me to say for sure. Usually those scars are due to an old injury to the cornea. My best recommendation is to get him to your vet for an exam so they can look at the eye thoroughly with a scope. It does not look serious to me at this time but again, hard for me to be sure just by looking at a photo. Aussies are known for having eye issues so it would be better to be safe than sorry and just have it checked out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This could be just a normal pigment change or it could be something more serious. I would have your vet take a look to ensure there is no infection or other abnormalities with the eye. i hope this helps!

Hi, it is difficult to tell for sure without a proper clinical examination. My worry would be like yours, that Daisy ‘s cornea has been accidentally scratched. This is something that normally occurs acutely in one of the eyes, especially after a walk and a scrabble between dogs. I would recommend that you gently clean the are around Daisy’s eye just with some mild salty water, boil some water then put a dessert spoon of salt in a mug, stir and leave it too cool down. When lukewarm just wipe the discharge around the eye and monitor for the next hour. If Daisy appears to be in pain, or if there is is still quite a bit of discharge,I suggest you see a vet early today. The reason being she could have suffered a traumatic injury. If she seems almost back to her normal self, I would recommend that you see a vet during normal hours just to have some appropriate treatment.

HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lola! Lola's eye is very abnormal. I wonder if it is something genetic like early cataracts. Has the eye been abnormal since you got her? I would highly recommend that you see a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Your Veterinarian should be able to refer you. be sure your Vet checked her intra-ocular pressure, danes are prone to glaucoma. It appears you took her to the Vet and they stained the eye for an ulcer. They can also get rolling in or rolling out of the eye lids. I hope this helps in some way, but if she was my dog I would see a specialist. Good luck!
