My dog is nauseous, eating grass, licking. What to do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 100 lbs

My wife messaged you about our "son" River last night. You said he may be nauseated and it would seem like that would be the case. He wants to eat tons of grass when we take him out, is that safe? And doesn't seem to be acting any different than his usual goofy self but licking and swallowing at random times. We have an appt we made today but it isn't until 1/14/20. We don't have much money and lost one of our cars right before Christmas. What can/should we do to help him before the appt

Dogs can eat grass when nauseated, and it's fine but it can make them void. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
