My dog has bloody diarrhea but seems okay. Does she need an emergency vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Shorkie | Female | 12 years and 8 months old | 19 lbs

My 12 year old dog had two vowels movements today (first one mostly solid) but the second one was diarrhea with drops of blood in it. She ate normally this morning and is drinking water. She’s not acting much different. She wagging her tail and perky. Should I take her to emergency vet right away or is this something that can wait for normal vet tomorrow? Thanks

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about May. Oh no, poor girl. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, if she has bloody poop while food is withheld, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My pet has diarrhea but it’s starting to turn bloody
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Rebel. Poor girl. It may be her intestinal tract is so irritated from the diarrhea that it's now turned bloody or she could have hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Because it's turned bloody, it's time to see the vet. I would take her into a vet today to get this diagnosed and treated. I hope this helps!

Even random food can cause GI upset. The only food Kira needs is her dog food. I'm concerned that she is pooping blood, keep a close eye on that. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, she continues to have blood in her poop, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

Hi, Prisha has done diaharrea 5 times within the last 10 hours, around 10-12 oz each time, we didn't see the first one because it was hidden behind the sofa... so she ate her breakfast as usual. She is happy and playful. she is drinking lots of water

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Charlie! Blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon and we usually like to start dogs on antibiotics when they have blood in the stool. If Charlie is acting normal, not vomiting and is eating I think he can wait for your Vet to open tomorrow. If he is vomiting and not acting normal you should take him in an emergency hospital. The causes for diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, new treat, food or table scraps, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. Most of the time we do not ever know the underlying cause. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours, do not limit water. Then resume feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 days of normal stools. I hope this helps and I wish Charlie a speedy recovery!

The diarrhea could be irritating Odin's GI tract, leading to the bleeding. The bland diet of chicken and rice is a good idea. Feed it in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
