My cat's tail tip fell off. Does she need an emergency vet visit?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 months and 14 days old | 9 lbs

found one inch piece of cat's tail on floor this morning. End of what remains has blood on it but is not actively bleeding. 2 months ago, there was an injury to that part of tail, causing there to be no hair for a short half-inch section near the tip.Vet said to keep eye on it, but nothing got worse since then. My question: do we need to get medical attention immediately (it is sunday morning), or can this wait till tomorrow morning? Can we put anything on it now, to reduce risk of infection?

This will be painful to her, and there are no OTC pain medications you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to cats, and are fatal if given. You absolutely have to take her into a vet now, this cannot wait until the morning. Please have her seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. I am so sorry that your kitty was injured. Technically, this is an emergency because if an infection gets started in the bone, it can have serious consequences for her. It is very unlikely the tail will heal on its own, but I have seen this injury in feral cats & the tail tip can eventually just slough off. Keep cleaning the wound but do make an appointment with your veterinarian at your earliest convenience to have this taken care of properly. All the best & thanks for contacting Boop by Petco.

Hi. Poor thing! Yes, they can die from infection or blood loss or shock. I'm not sure if you mean she had it surgically removed today, or trauma removed it? Either way, I'd get her to the ER Right away.

What is wrong if piece of my cat tail fall off
Your cat may have had an injury to the tail that cut off the blood supply and that piece died. Your cat should be checked by your vet to see if there is any repair or further damage that should be addressed.

If the tip of Tar's tail fell off, you need to take her into the vet immediately. That white string may actually be bone, and the tail needs to be sutured. Neosporin will not help her, please take her into a vet right away, this is a medical emergency.

I would gently clean her tail with an antiseptic soap and warm water, then have her seen by a vet in the morning. If there are puncture wounds, it's likely Sadie was bitten by something causing the hairless, and that can lead to infection. She may need antibiotics to treat the infection, and the vet can prescribed that. Please do not put any neosporin or topical antibiotic ointment on her tail. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. The vet can prescribe oral antibiotics if needed.

There is a wound on the tail tip and the tail itself (bone muscles and skin) is necrotic and slowly falling. I would recommend an immediate check up as wound curettage and antibiotic treatment are needed as soon as possible.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Albhe. This happens more often than you realize! It's very important you do not give him any human pain medications. Many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would keep a close eye on him to see if he has any pain. Pain can be shown by him keeping his tail limp, not moving it, lethargy, or a loss of appetite. If you see any of those signs, have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps.

This needs to be examined by a veterinarian today. Please do not wait until after the weekend He will need pain medicine and antibiotics and the vet needs to check whether there is already infection present. He may even have to have part of his tail amputated. Please take him to a veterinarian NOW.

I would discontinue the soap and peroxide. They are great for initial wound cleaning and removing bacteria, but continued use can damage healthy tissue and be very irritating and painful. You can just use a warm wet washcloth to clean the wound as needed, or if Fuzz will allow you can run that part of her tail under warm water for 5 minutes at a time to flush out any bacteria that may be present. Bactine is ok. Signs that she should see a vet right away would be a poor appetite, progressive lethargy, swelling around the wound, creamy discharge or a foul-smelling odor, or a rectal temperature over 103. After examination by the vet, they may prescribe antibiotics or other treatments, or may recommend amputation of the tail if any bones are broken. Wounds on a cat tail can be very difficult to treat since there is not a very good blood supply and it is an appendage that moves a lot!
