Why is my conure's new wing feather so much longer after molt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male | 9 months and 13 days old

I have a black capped conure. He is about 9 months old. I have had him for 6 months and he has gone through a molt since i got him. I have recently noticed one of his wing feathers is a lot longer then the rest of his wing feathers on both wings. I was just wondering why this is? Is it just a new feather and that maybe soon he will need his wings clipped again? Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out about Rico and including photos. This is probably the result of new flight feathers having grown in after a molt. Monitor the color of the feathers as they can dull due to dietary deficiencies (not enough vegetables or protein) or excessive petting. When petting the birds, the oils come off the hand and can make the feathers dark. This is not a health concern, but occasional showers can help. Good luck.
