Why is my German Shepherd so itchy? Could it be a yeast infection?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 75 lbs

My 3 year old Male German shepherd has been very itchy and scratching, licking/biting at paws, legs, ears, rectum and private area. He also has been smelling his private area a lot and licking it. He was a steroid for 6 weeks due to flea allergy which is gone now. I’m wondering if it could be a possible yeast infection now? Sometimes he does have an odor on his stomach area. He also has dry, dark, scaly skin color. And irritated rectum

It could be a yeast infection but if the steroid wore it, Cole's allergies could have returned. Some dogs with allergies need allergy medication regularly. Have him seen by his vet to discuss putting him on something like Apoquel or Cytopoint.

First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). Most likely he has allergic reaction causing a lot of skin irritation. The other causes include skin infection and skin parasites, which are also common in dogs. The most effective treatment for excessive itchiness due to allergy are steroids (injection or tablets). I would recommend you to take Kane to your local vet to confirm the diagnosis (looking at the skin scrapes may be necessary to make the diagnosis) and to get the right treatment for your dog.

Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking or chewing. This may be enough to allow healing, but if the underlying cause is not treated then it may not help. Ideally, Ceaser should be examined by a veterinarian to diagnose infection (bacterial, fungal or parasites) or an allergy. Antibiotics may be needed if the skin is broken. If not, steroids and/or antihistamines may provide relief from the itch.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. It sounds like we may have two separate problems- a skin problem and a GI problem. The skin itching could be related to food but is more likely related to environmental allergies (which can develope at any age). Another possibility is that it’s actually pain- she is the right age for arthritis and other problems. This may be especially true if it’s over a joint. A foreign body like a thorn stuck in the skin is also possible. For the vomiting, there are many many possibilities. Acid reflux is more common with age. A trial of small frequent meals and Pepcid AC (famotidine) can help. Other possibilities include long-term foreign material (cloth or object swallowed long ago), organ disease (kidney disease, pancreatitis) cancer, and more. Abdominal xrays, full blood work, abdominal ultrasound, and sometimes even an upper GI scope or exploratory surgery may be needed to figure it out. It is hard to say exactly what the cause of Ben's skin lesions may be due to without examining Ben first, but some possibilities may include a fungal infection, bacterial infection, mites, a food or environmental allergy, or evidence of an underlying endocrine disorder such as Cushing's disease or a thyroid problem. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a fungal culture, skin scraping, and some blood work. I would recommend Ben visit another veterinarian or perhaps a board certified veterinary dermatologist soon to have the possibilities above ruled out and a definitive diagnosis made so he can get the most appropriate treatment. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. There are a few things that could be going on with Sasha, but I would start by making sure she doesn't have fleas. This is a common area for fleas to collect and bite, which can make her itchy. Try treating for fleas, and if that doesn't work they start looking for other causes including hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, infected anal glands, etc. Also, they can sometimes get a 'hot spot' or a patch of skin infection, where they have been chewing because of the moisture and bacteria in their saliva, so you may need to treat a secondary skin infection as well. My seven month old German Shepherd has been really itchy lately and I have now noticed his skin flaking like this, is this just dry skin or something worse that needs checked out. I recently started him on fish oil to hopefully relieve his dry skin.
It looks like Sam may have a bit of a skin infection. The itchiness may be from allergies, mites or some type of irritation. I would recommend bringing Sam to a veterinarian to have them fully evaluate his skin. He may need an antibiotic, shampoo and antihistamines to help. It is possible we could have yeast or bacteria here. The only way to tell for certain is to do what is called a cytology on the area. Your vet can take a sample (they may use a piece of tape or press a microscope slide directly on the skin) and look at it under the microscope. They can then determine if we have infection present and treat appropriately.
