Why is my dog suddenly drooling and pacing like he's about to vomit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 15 lbs

My dog all of a sudden started drooling and has been pacing for about 5-10 minutes like he’s looking for somewhere to throw up. He’s pacing around the walls and behind the furniture

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Sully. Poor boy! Drooling is a sign of nausea. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Drooling and heaving is usually a sign of nausea. In addition to the medicines prescribed by your veterinarian you can try the following as well: I would fast Scarface for 24 hours and then him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If he does not improve he needs to be seen by your veterinarian for a recheck.
