My dog is overprotective. How do I stop his growling and nipping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 16 lbs

How can I stop my dog’s overprotective behavior? I want him to be protective and protect me in the case of a emergency but not for any other reason. He growls when a stranger gets close to me and I don’t know how to correct him. He’s nipped at a person before because they were touching me. He didn’t draw blood he just grabbed their shirt. How can I correct him for this? I need him to stop and I can’t afford a dog trainer. I’m hoping you can help me

I am sorry you are having this problem, I know it is frustrating. As you know, working with a trainer would be the best approach by far, so if you are able to find a way to squeeze that into the budget that would be ideal.
