My active Staffy puppy is limping on his back leg. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 9 months and 22 days old | 70 lbs

My 70 lb 9 month old Staffordshire Terrier has started to limp. He is very high energy and extremely active. Nothing has changed with any of his behaviors and he is insisting on continuing to do zoomies all thru the house into the garage to the yard. I'm under the assumption that it may be a sprain. I'm just sick with worry he's my little boy!! My husband and I have narrowed it to the left back leg.

Poor Chance! I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
