Avoid high salt treats like cheese, deli meats, and dog treats. Keeping to foods and treats that have less than 1 mg sodium per calorie is recommended. Low sodium treats include fruits and vegetables (but be sure to avoid grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic!).

Talk to your vet about trying different brands that have prescription kidney diet. But if it is him not eat anything or eat a normal, good quality dog food, it is more important that he eat something. As for treats, focus on low sodium, low protein treats. Dog biscuits are ok, and veggies and fruits that are safe for dogs. Stay away from meaty dog treats or jerky.

Wet kidney diets are often recommended as they are specifically formulated to reduce the workload on the kidneys, provide extra water and slow progression of kidney disease often resulting in a longer and healthier life. It is important to avoid high salt or foods with hard to digest protein sources as these require the kdneys to work harder to clear the waste produced. Occassional treats of egg, cottage cheese, white fish or chicken, vegetables and brown rice can be fed in moderation also; omega fatty acids are also useful and should be added if you cannot get him to eat the prescription diet (which should already be supplemented).

One option might be to look into a home cooked diet. A veterinary nutritionist could help formulate a recipe for you (your veterinarian could send in a referral for you). This website has a list of veterinary nutritionists: www.dacvn.org There are also many more commercial kidney diets available and sometimes dogs will find one brand more palatable than the other: you could try Purina NF or Royal Canin's various flavors of kidney diets. Finally, some dogs at the end stages of kidney failure have such a significant decrease in appetite that they are rapidly losing weight, and in these cases sometimes it is more important for the dog to eat something rather than the prescription diet. You can talk to your veterinarian and see if this might be the case for your dog.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Yes, in general, vegetables are fine for dogs with kidney disease. Do avoid extra meat but he does need some. Fish oil or fish skin are great for kidneys. If available in your area, there are prescription kidney diets that are ideal for animals with kidney disease so discuss that with your vet. (Hill’s k/d, Royal canin rental support) As always, the following are considered toxic to dogs so do not give any of these: onions, garlic, grapes, macadamia nuts, and raisins. I think given your information you have provided this sounds like appropriate supportive care at home. Iv fluids are always better but much more expensive and not curative in the case of kidney failure. Cerenia can also be used (anti nausea medication) in end stage renal failure to keep them from becoming so nauseated they can't eat or hold down food. Dialysis is available at teaching hospitals or a few specialty hospitals around the country. I hope this helps. My best to you both.

Yes, all of those foods would be fine to add into his diet as tolerated by his Gastrointestinal system. It is important to note, however, that most homemade diets are not balanced with adequate vitamins and minerals so it is advisable to supplement with a well sourced canine vitamin . Another option would be to try a renal specific diet such as the ones from Royal Canin or Hills. If you want something handmade and human grade then I recommend he renal diets at Justfoodfordogs. It is also important to check renal enzymes and electrolytes every 3 months or so to monitor progression.

I would definitely go with the Royal Canin Renal support. This food is specifically formulated for dogs with kidney failure. The problem with a homemade diet is that it is extremely difficult to get the correct balance of nutrients, and you could accidentally end up giving him too much phosphorus in trying to meet his other nutritional needs. Too much phosphorous is detrimental to his kidneys while they are failing, and it's best to stay with a specially formulated food recommended by your vet. Keep in mind as well that the information you are getting from the internet is not typically provided by vets, but rather lay people who have no training in animal health or nutrition. In my opinion, when it comes to the health of your dog, it's best to listen to the experts who have done the training and have the knowledge to correctly treat your dog, who is the vet.
