My new 10-year-old mastiff is dry heaving. What should I do?

My mastiff dog is is 10 years old . I just got him from animal shelter last thursday. This morning he ie dry heaving and nothing is coming up. He is not doing it continuously. But off and on for the last five minutes. What should I do?

Congrats on your new dog, but I'm sorry Zeus isn't feeling well. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. If he keeps dry heaving on this diet, starts vomiting, has a loss of appetite, or becomes lethargic, have him seen by a vet.

Poor Duke! If he's been dry heaving for five hours and seems very lethargic, it would be best to have him seen by a vet now to diagnose the cause of the dry heaving. It isn’t normal for a puppy to dry heave. However it is a good sign that he is still active and eating well. He may be eating too fast and it’s getting stuck in his upper GI tract ( esophagus,stomach). He also may have a motility issue (unable to move his food along at a proper pace). You can try purchasing a maze bowl from your local pet store or online store. Also you can try feeding him canned food instead for a week or two to see if this makes a difference. Feeding him smaller portions more frequently throughout the day may also help. If he is still dry heaving after a week or two of trying these suggestions, then it’s best to have him seen by your vet for a thorough physical exam. The vet may suggest trying him on acid reducer medication and/or promotility medication. I hope this helps and best wishes with your puppy Jasper. Take care.

My 7month old staffy x ridgeback mastiff has been vomiting over the past 2 days but still eating And drinking normal
He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Bentley boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

The peroxide can be very irritating to the esophagus and stomach lining. It is the main reason we do not recommend using it to induce vomiting. You can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, allowing small, frequent amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a soft, bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Start with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no dry heaving or vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to Gene's regular diet. If the dry heaving persists, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.

Vomiting can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Zeus evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid he is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check his hydration status and give him medications to make him feel better. Good luck!

I got a dog friday and he ate some food saturday and now he is throwing up do you know what it could be?
I'm sorry that new dog is sick! The food that Loki ate on Saturday could be causing his vomiting. He could also have a GI illness, foreign body, or pancreatitis. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps with his vomiting before having to take him into the vet.
