My dog ate a cooked bone and now has diarrhea. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Perro de Presa Canario | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 135 lbs

Dog was chewing on a cooked beef bone. Looks like he chewed some up and it crumbled. He had hard dry poop this morning now diarrhea.

It sounds like like bone has upset Bruno's stomach. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Yes, either or both may cause gastrointestinal upset or, more seriously, pancreatitis. If he is behaving normally otherwise, you can try withholding all food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If symptoms do not resolve or if Emmitt develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain, have him examined right away by your veterinarian. A simple blood test can be done in the clinic to screen for pancreatitis.

My Great Dane are a pork bone now he has diarrhea and won’t eat
Withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he still has diarrhea or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

My dog ate a bully bone yesterday and seemed fine. Took him out today and he had diarrhea and it looked like blood mixed. Kinda dark but also red. He has eaten and he was just playing ball. Not acting out of the ordinary.
It could be that the bully bone upset Tornado’s stomach leading to the diarrhea with blood in it. Given he’s otherwise acting normal, I can give you a home remedy for him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts a couple of times a day for several days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet diet. If the diarrhea continues in the absence of food, he has diarrhea on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces, he stops eating, starts vomiting, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, and/or becomes very lethargic, take him into a vet immediately. My dog got into some food at a BBQ the other day and ate some ribs. I know the potential risks of him doing this, so I have been watching him. He just woke me up to go potty (he never does that in the middle of the night) and he had diarrhea 3 times.
You can change his food to boiled chicken and rice as this is very bland. You can also get probiotics from any pet store to start. If he starts vomiting or has a decrease in appetite, or starts with bloody diarrhea, then he needs to be seen by your vet. If it continues past 48 hours with no improvement, then I would get him checked also

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.

Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Sasha for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if she gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Cooked bones can cause a problem for dogs in a number of ways. If Chip broke the bone while eating it, it could splinter and cause problems in the GI tract. Bones can also get stuck in the GI tract. The fat can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Diarrhea that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. Since Chip has blood throughout his stool, I would recommend a visit to the vet. In the meantime, if he is eating and drinking normally, we will often recommend a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). If he does well with a bland diet and his diarrhea resolves, then you can slowly transition back to his normal diet over a few days. We aren't able to see a past questions or a message thread, so thanks for including the info about the chicken bone. He could certainly get diarrhea from the chicken or eggs, either because it's a different thing for his body to process and dog's don't do great with quick diet changes, OR because he go a salmonella or e.coli infection from the raw chicken, which is certainly possible. Bones can digest in the stomach, so it's possible that it was dissolve or pass without causing any issues, but Mick's small size makes that less likely. If he were vomiting, having decreased appetite, appearing uncomfortable, less energy, then I would say a vet visit is needed ASAP. If he seems totally normal, just keep an eye on him. If he has diarrhea but is otherwise normal, a vet visit would be the safest option, but if that's not an option today, you can give him boiled chicken and rice for 1-2 more days to see if that calms down his intestinal tract. If not, he'll need to see the vet. Good luck!
