Adopting a cat: Is a past anesthesia seizure a long-term risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed

Hi there, I'm seriously thinking about adopting a 2 year old tabby cat I saw in my local shelter, they told me that she had ate a toy when she was a kitten and had surgery to remove it about a month and a half ago. She also had a seizure when she was on anesthesia right after surgery but they say since then she has been getting a lot better and they haven't seen signs of anything yet and her blood work is good. Is the seizure she had something I should be really concerned about?

Poor kitty. It is very likely the seizure was due to a buildup of toxins when she was obstructed with the toy. If she hasn’t had a seizure for over 2 years now since, then I would say she is likely going to be ok health wide in that regard. I would ask if she had any other seizures since then, and if no, then it is likely not a concern moving forward. : ) Best of luck with deciding on adopting Nellie going forward. Take care.
