My cat's belly is hard and distended after starting insulin. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Can an insulin dose of 3 units, twice per day cause a distended abdomen in a cat, as this is the case with my cat. He is not overweight. His abdomen is rounded and hard. He started insulin glargine 10 days ago. He is eating and has normal bowel and bladder movements. Please advise. Thank you

Hello. No, there is no reason to think that the insulin is the cause of this other than by bringing Oti's diabetes under control, he may be eating better & utilizing food in a more normal manner. Cats with diabetes often will have tremendous appetites, but lose weight because of severe metabolic imbalances. Of course, there could be another issue at hand so it might be best to have Oti evaluated by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience.
