Dog's ear smells after skunk spray. Is it in his ear canal? Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Coton de Tulear | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

About two weeks my dog simba was sprayed by a skunk. The skunk had sprayed the side of his face, and most of the spray was on top of his ear. I immediately bathed him in skunk smell remover and over the course over several days and many baths the smell seemed to be gone. However, a few days ago I noticed his ear canal smelled weird. Is it possible the skunk spray got into his ear canal and is causing issues? He seems very sensitive in the affected area. I’m not at all sure what to do.

Yes, it is very possible that skunk spray went down in the ear canal. You should probably try cleaning the ear with ear wash. Do it daily for 3-4 days and if not improved then he should see a vet (especially if the ear is tender). ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-ear-rinse-for-dogs )
