My cat has black bumps near her anus. Is it dried poop or a vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old | 9.5 lbs

I’ve noticed black bumps around my cats anus, that do not seem to come off when wiped with a wet towel. Car is otherwise acting, eating, and using the liter box normally. Is this just dried poop or something I need to bring her in for? My vet can’t see her until day after next and not sure if I have to bring her to ER.

Those are the openings to the anal glands. Sometimes some dried anal gland material can accumulate at the opening. If Poopsie is not scooting or licking excessively I think you can wait to see your vet for an appointment.

I would get it checked by your vet. It could be an impacted anal gland, which could eventually become infected and need attention anyway, but it's best to get it checked to make sure it isn't something more serious that could be a problem later on.
