My dog has weeping sores, licks, and lost fur. Hotspot spray failed.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 65 lbs

Shadow has allergies to dye and certain preservatives sk we are very careful what he eats. He has developed these weeping sores on his side and crotch regions. He is constantly licking them and has lost all the fur in those areas. He is NOT a dog we can take to the vet. We have tried "hotspot" sprays but they dont help. What should we do to help control this?

Without an accurate diagnosis it is impossible to guess the most appropriate management for any skin condition. I would recommend a sedated exam if he is uncomfortable being handled in order to confirm or rule out causes such as infection, allergy, mites etc as each would require different treatment. If you feel he is food sensitive then a hydrolysed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic should be trialled for 8-12 weeks (no treats, snacks or flavoured tablets to be fed during this time). Depending on the diagnosis, fatty acid supplements, medicated shampoos, allergy medications and flea/mite prevention may also be required to ease the constant discomfort and irritation
