Why did my cockatiel die suddenly after being fluffed up and weak?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | unneutered | 1lb

My cockatiel died last night. He was a very vocal and active bird. He was 2 years old and had a very healthy diet. 2 nights ago he was found "fluffed up" to the bottom of the cage. The next morning he was very weak and couldn't move around. Due to the lack of avian vets where we live, we spoke to a few breeders that reccomended coccicare claiming he most likely came down with coccidosis. Last night we noticed he kept his wings opened and then suddenly fell over and died. I want another opinion

Thanks for reaching out, but am sorry for your loss. There are lots of possibilities, but a non-avian veterinarian would have been a better choice than breeders. Coccidiosis would have resulted in diarrhea. Unfortunately only a necropsy can give definitive answers. Bacterial or viral infections, metabolic disorders such as liver or kidney problems, toxicities are only a few possibilities. Good luck.
