My dog had lung infection, why isn't she gaining weight now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Fox Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 3 months old | 9 lbs

Hi, In the last few months, my dog has had liver infection and lung infection. She started gaining weight after the 1 infection was gone, but she hasn't gained any since the lung infection. She has an appointment with the vet next month. She's acting like her normal self, the only thing is, not gaining. Any suggestions why? Her white blood cell count was high and the vet said he'll test her for cancer next month. But til then, any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!! Kathy

High calorie food such as Hill's A/D or puppy food that is high calorie is all you can really do here. Lung infections can take up to 6 months to a year to clear completely, and the weight can be one of the last things that improves. She likely won't gain any weight until the underlying condition is treated, but you can do your best with the high calorie food to at least help her not to lose any more weight. I do hope that her cancer tests come back favorable. Best of luck and take care.
