My dog keeps getting hot spots, hair loss, and lethargy. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 80 lbs

We have had my dog for a year, we got her when she was 1.5 years old. She was totally healthy. In September, a friend took her into the ocean, she got an ear infection, it came back, and since then no ear infection, but she’s had persistent health problems. She gets a combination of hot spots, bad breath, becomes lethargic, and her hair falls out. The vet puts her on antibiotics, she recovers and is ok for a week, then it all begins again. She had NO health problems the first year we had her.

This sounds like allergies to me - dogs can develop environmental allergies at any time, but typically symptoms will develop when they are young adults. It sounds like Junon needs a thorough allergy work up and may need medication to help reduce itching and skin inflammation. It definitely looks like that wound may need antibiotics. I’d recommend rechecking with your vet.
