My goldfish was injured by filter: broken back, bulging eye. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Gold Fish

My goldfish seems to have a broken back and tail, he leans to the side when swimming. He swims for about 5 seconds and then goes very still. I don’t know what to do. I found him this morning sucked up in the filter, so i don’t know the extent of injury. His one eye is bulging and I know that is not a good sign.

Thanks for reaching out about Copper and including photos. Fractured or luxated back can be due to trauma, vitamin C deficiencies, stray voltage electrocution and other problems. The only way to determine a spinal fracture is through a radiographs. Support care with anti-inflammatories and pain medications could pull this little one through, but must be able to eat. Check and correct water quality, as pristine water important for recovery. Good luck.
