Senior cat bladder issues: How many litter boxes do we need?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

We have 3 cats. Our black female has been having some bladder issues (14 yrs old) so we moved her litter box to our upstairs bedroom from the basement. I’ve noticed our male yellow cat using it too. Should we leave it there? Should we bring one of the other boxes up? Should we take it back down?

As long as both are using it with no issues, you can leave it there. You may need to change it more frequently though. The rule of thumb for litterboxes is 1 per cat plus an extra in a neutral location.
