Dog's belly sensitive after spay? She growls when I touch it.

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My dog was spayed 8weeks ago. She is fully recovered and seems happy with her self. However we have noticed in the last few days if we stroke her belly she becomes agitated and will runaway and grow. She dusnt seem unwell or any signs of discomfort. We we be concerned from internal problems?

It may be that area is sensitive to Canila. Think about if you've ever had surgery, and the scar may be sensitive even if it's healed. I broke my humerus 11 years ago and needed two surgeries on it (I fell off my horse). It was a while ago, and I still don't like people touching my arm or scar. I'd have her checked out by a vet to be safe.

Actually, it could be stitches, depending on what kind of material they used for that layer (we close abdominal incisions in 3 individual layers). Or it could be scar tissue. Either way, if it isn’t causing any issues, just let it be! :) If it seems to be causing discomfort or swelling, then it needs to be examined by a vet.

From the pictures, it looks like skin irritation, and I don't think it's caused by something more serious such as from the spay. If Stella is chewing at the area, that certainly can be causing it to get worse. I am concerned about infection in that area, and she does need to see a vet to have this treated. I'd take her into a vet today or tomorrow. I hope this helps!

Just adopted 2 months ago. Don't have health history but vet says she's healthy. Was spayed mid-May. I noticed lumps around her incision. I treated with antibacterial ointment. They seem to be going away. She has been itching a lot and dragging her b
She may be having an allergic reaction to some of the sutures breaking down or another allergic reaction from an environmental cause on her abdomen. Since she is scratching so much, she has potential to create an infection. It is best to let your vet look at the area and see if she needs antibiotics or something stronger for the scratching and find out what caused it.

I will hope that there is nothing seriously wrong with Bella! It could be that her abdomen was sensitive that day, and she didn't want it touched. When dogs have an upset stomach, they are more sensitive to being touched in that area. I think it's a good idea to have an ultrasound done to check on her, and as I said in a previous post, just monitor her for now and take her into a vet right away if she becomes sicker.

My puppy was spayed 6 months ago, today I noticed a knot or swelling in the area of her incision. Any info or ways to treat would be appreciated.
Hmmmm...six months is a long time after surgery to see a suture reaction or a seroma (fluid-filled area underneath the skin). I suspect your dog may have a small hernia or opening in the abdominal wall. When we do abdominal surgery (which a spay is) we have to cut through three layers of tissue. First the skin. Under that, the fat. And finally the body wall, which is muscle and connective tissue. Subsequently, when we finish the surgery and close the incision, we stitch all 3 layers separately. Rarely, one of those, typically the body wall, doesn't heal all the way and a small opening into the abdomen is left. These need to be attended to, since a piece of the bowel can lodge itself in the hole and cause a blockage or strangulation. Call the vet who did the operation and talk to him or her about your concern for this complication, and schedule a follow up.

My dog got spayed a few weeks ago and she is fine right now but there a bump on her stomach. It's not red and it's not bothering her. Is this normal l? Should I take her to the vet?
No worries. The internal sutures that are used during a pet spay can take as long as 2-3 months to completely dissolve. So the bumps you are feeling are likely a minor suture reaction occurring just underneath the skin. As long as there is no opening of the skin, redness or oozing at the site, Dixie is likely just fine. Just continue to monitor the area for any changes and report them to your vet if seen, but in most cases the bumpy area will resolve on its own over time.

If the darkened skin appeared around where she had a spay incision, it may be that the tissue darkened some during the healing process, she naturally had some darker patches that weren't visible before shaving the area, or you are seeing the spay scar from the incision itself, especially if it was done recently. If the area is bothersome to Zeytin, or is very itchy or rapidly changing in appearance, that could indicate something such as a brewing infection or allergy that should be checked out by your vet.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. If she was spayed within the last month, I would be concerned for an incision site infection or suture reaction. If she was spayed as a puppy, I am more concerned for trauma, spider/other bug bite, skin infection, or even cancer (though she is pretty young for that). Either way, I'd bring her into the vet sooner rather than later to have him or her look at and feel that area. Best wishes to you and Dyphanl!

My puppy was spayed on January 9th. Her stitches were removed on January 19th. The vet said she was perfectly fine and ready to go back to normal. We were very protective and carefull during the recovering. I even took her to another vet for a second
The most likely cause is a suture reaction, similar to how the body tries to get rid of a sticker in your finger. However, an infection or a hernia are also possible. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian soon. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

my dog got spayed this morning, and I noticed now she’s bloated in the abdomen. Her incision looks great and she’s acting fine other than a little sleepy. Could this just be from post surgery?
Usually there is no air in the abdomen, but when we open the abdomen in order to remove the ovaries and uterus, air gets into it. Sometimes, after closing up, some air is retained. Over the next week or so the air will be absorbed and disappears. It is not dangerous, maybe a little bit uncomfortable.
