Why is my parakeet flopping and unable to stand? Is he dying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male

My parakeet is not standing just kind of flops over and face plants while he’s sitting. Every once in a while he startles. I’m afraid he’s dying.

Thanks for reaching out about Ocean and including a photo. It sounds serious and a veterinary visit is recommended either tonight or first thing tomorrow morning. Hard to see on the photo but is the cere thickened and tan? That is not normal in males and could be an indication of a testicular tumor secreting estrogen. Other illnesses are possible such as infections, metabolic disorders (liver, kidney) and other problems. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range, this can provide some aid. A veterinary visit earlier in the disease process has a better prognosis. Good luck.
