Why does my dog have a chugging cough like choking after coming in?

About twice a month when our dog comes in from outside he has a deep chugging cough like he is choking. It only lasts a few minutes and then he is ok. What could be causing this? Thanks. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know why he is doing this. I recommend to check all the plants in the back yard for something he may be eating. Check for any dusty areas where maybe he is sniffing around. Watch him when he is outside because that might help to figure things out. I hope this helps.
