Why is my long-haired cat suddenly matted and not grooming herself?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

Hi my cat has longer fur and shes never had matted fur or knots before but she keeps getting them over the past few days. Is there something wrong with her? Or should I just start brushing her? I've never had to brush her much but I'm worried it could be something serious if shes not grooming herself. I adopted a dog in April so I dont knowing that has anything to do with it. I've tried to feel for lumps but I dont feel any. Just the matted fur.

I'd start brushing Tessie daily. If you have trouble getting the matts out, have her seen by a vet to get her groomed. I'd also have her seen by a vet for a health check, as not grooming herself can be a sign of illness.

If he has a lot of tartar on his teeth, or red inflamed gums, grooming will also hurt. You should take him to your vet for an exam, and if the mats are very bad, a shave under anesthesia.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Lily. Poor girl! Yes I would get those matts shaved out, they will be painful to her. I'd also recommend having her seen by a vet. She's stopped grooming herself for a reason, and it could be it's painful for her to groom. Arthritis is common in senior cats. A chronic illness, such as diabetes and kidney disease, could sap a cat's energy and lead them to not grooming. Both of those are common in senior cats. I recommend having her seen by a vet this week, and getting her a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis. I hope this helps!

I think my calico cat is shedding excessively and her fur is matted quite a bit, especially on her backside and sides. Never outside. I believe she is around 13 yrs old.
This could be due to Kitty's age. When cats are older, they can groom themselves less effectively than younger cats, sometimes resulting in hair matting, skin odor, and inflammation. It could also be that she has arthritis, making it painful for her to reach around to groom her backside and sides. I would make an appointment for her with a groomer. They can brush out her matts (they may need to be shaved), and get her coat back into a better condition. Then you should brush her daily to prevent further matts from occurring. It's very important to get those matts removed asap, as they will be pulling on her skin and it will be painful for her. I'd also make an appointment with her vet for a health check, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis just to see if everything is ok health wise for her. The vet can also examine her to see if she has arthritis, and can prescribe pain medications as needed. Please do not give her any human pain medications, many are toxic to cats and are f

My cat is 18 years old and lately I have noticed his hair has a lot of clumps in it. Is this normal?
As cats get older, they tend to stop grooming themselves as much causing the fur to mat. If you're able to, brushing him daily will help prevent these mats from developing. I suggest taking him to a groomer or vet so they're able to groom him and prevent the mats from getting bigger and causing discomfort.

Older cats are often not as good at grooming themselves due to pain or arthritis. She may have difficulty reaching the usual spots. You can help by brushing her more often but if she's painful I would talk to your vet about pain management. Good luck!

My older cat appears to have altogether stopped grooming herself. Is there anything I can do to help decrease the amount of clumpy, matted hair she has? I'm fearful to cut or shave any matted hair since I don't want to cut her skin.
Definitely don't cut! You are very likely to cut the skin if you use scissors. You can use shaving clippers or take Calico to a groomer. Once the mats are gone, you will need to brush her daily to remove loose hairs to prevent the mats from coming back. I would also recommend having Calico evaluated by her vet to see if she has arthritis preventing her from being able to groom. Medications may make her more comfortable.

Usually when cats stop grooming themselves, this is an indication that they do not feel well and could possibly be sick or have a disease condition. I do not recommend shaving him at this time but rather take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible so that he can have a physical examination performed. Most of the time, when cats begin to feel better because they’re getting treated correctly, they will begin grooming themselves. The veterinarian may need to do some diagnostic testing on him such as a fecal analysis, bloodwork, or x-rays to help determine what is causing this lethargy and inability to groom. Poor Paws!! I suspect that maybe Paws has been having some difficulty grooming himself in this area. If the mat of fur will not come off easily you will likely need to have a groomer or your vet shave it off with clippers. To help prevent the problem recurring be sure to brush Paws regularly (daily is best) to help remove the dead fur from his coat that is accumulating into a mat. If Paws will tolerate it then occasional bathing can be helpful too.

Poor Samson! The matted fur is likely due to decreased grooming. This causes the hair that is normally shed to be recaptured by the fur on the rest of the body and stuck there. Conditioners usually do not relieve the matting, and the only way to get rid of the mats is to cut them. I recommend having this done by a groomer to avoid hurting Samson, or you can gently use an electric clipper. I'm sorry to hear that Samson has a tumor, this may be a thyroid issue, which is very common in older cats. This can be treated with radiotherapy, dietary management, and medications that can be prescribed by your veterinarian. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

I'm sorry Maggie is having troubles grooming herself! I understand you don't want to wait until she is suffering, but as long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, I don't think you are being selfish at all. You did the right thing by taking her into the vet, and you can take her into a groomer. The groomer can shave off the matted hair, and then you can brush her back daily. This will help keep the mats from forming, and it will be a bonding time between the two of you. Cats typically do like being brushed, and you can give her treats for allowing you to do it. If she does stop eating, drinking, or develops other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, then I would take her back into the vet immediately for a discussion about her quality of life.
