My turtle's skin is shedding and bleeding. Should I take her to a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Turtle | Female | unspayed

Is this a serious condition/injury? A few weeks ago I noticed some skin was shedding, and gradually became worse over the weeks, now blood is visible.

Yes, this looks very serious. I suggest you dry dock her for a bit and do daily soaks in dilute Betadine solution (not scrub). Dilute 1 part betadine with 10 parts water. You can look up YouTube videos on dry docking. You also need to review all of your husbandry to make sure you are doing everything 100% correct - water temperature, diet, lighting, etc. If she is not eating or is not responding to treatment at home you will need to get her to a vet. Thanks for reaching out about Turtur and including photos. This does appear serious and needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Open wounds such as this can easily be contaminated by the water in which they live. Does Turtur live with another turtle, as they will often bite each other in the rear area. Systemic antibiotics, pain medications and wound care are probably needed. For now, keep Turtur in a dry, warm environment, out of water. Turtles can stay dry for prolonged periods of time and be fine. See your veterinarian today. Good luck.
