Is my non-mother dog's sore, warm nipples a sign of mastitis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female

Hi, so i have 2 female dogs, one of them had a litter of 10 pups around 4 weeks ago they have started eating solid/wet foods, but they have also started sucking on our other female (not the mother) she’s started producing milk, but her nipples are also warm and hardish and she has what looks like sores with a layer of puss. And when the pups suck off the actual mother the other dog sooks really bad and constantly keeps her eye on them. I was just wondering what I could do?

Do not allow the puppies to suckle on the dog that is not their mother. She is getting mastitis (infection in the mammary glands). You need to keep them separated. You can try home treatment for the mastitis with cabbage leaves (see link below) but she may need to see a vet for systemic antibiotics. ( https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/mastitis-in-dogs )
