My kitten meows for food. Should I feed her smaller, more frequent meals?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 6 months and 29 days old | 6 lbs

Is my kitten really hungry or is she just being a brat? Any time I walk even remotely near her food dish, she starts whining and meowing like crazy. I've never had a kitten before so I'm not sure what's normal. I've been feeding her a little more than what the bag says she should be getting daily (3/4 of a cup). Should I feed her smaller amounts more often throughout the day? Would that help?

Some cats can become obsessed with food, eating or even the ritual of feeding. It is very important to not allow Jinx to get heavy. In the wild cats eat 9-16 times a day so smaller, more frequent feedings are good. You could also get an automatic feeder, this can not only help to regulate how much she eats but it can help to transfer some of her feelings about her food bowl to the feeder. Using a food puzzle can also happen. I hope this helps.
